Are you looking for a way to burn fat? If you are like I used to be, then you are tired of carrying around excess weight. I know, because I’ve been there. There is nothing like stepping on that scale and having a big number stare back at you.

A former athlete, I had never been overweight. I was once (in my 20’s) 135 and fit. I could run all day and not get tired I ate whatever I wanted and never gained weight. As a child, I was the skinniest kid in my class, if not the school. I can remember desperately trying to put on weight (gasp!). To my chagrin, it never happened.

Fast forward to my late 20’s-early 30’s. An unhappy marriage facilitated bad eating habits, and even worse (or should I say, nonexistent) exercise habits. My endurance was so bad that I couldn’t even go up a flight of stairs without feeling tired. My weight ballooned from 135 to 180. Now, I am a small-framed person, so the extra weight looked terrible. By the time I extracted myself from my unhappy situation and came to my senses, I knew that my weight was out of control. I had gone from a size 2 to a size 14 in just 4 years. I looked for a sensible method to burn fat.

I decided that I was tired of looking and feeling terrible. So, with the help of my new fiancé, I began to burn fat and get the weight off. Aren’t you sick and tired of being overweight? Better still, aren’t you sick of trying diet after diet with nothing to show for it? Tried everything that you know how to burn fat? Well, here are 5 ways that I got the weight off. No lies here..just the honest truth about what works to burn fat:

  1. Cut out the sugar. If you are eating lots of sugar, you are sabotaging yourself. You will never burn fat if you keep eating sugar. Sugar comes in many forms, and in foods that you would never even suspect contain sugar. That diet bar/diet soda/flavored water you’re having right now? SUGAR. Stop it.
  2. Fried foods. Mom always said they were no good. They still aren’t. Bake, broil, steam your food. Until you get the weight off, fried foods are a no-no. If you’re serious and you want to burn fat, then stay away from french fries and anything else fried..
  3. Exercise. No way around this one. It’s not good enough to diet. Diet alone can only get you so far. To really lose weight and burn fat, you need to move, and move hard. Sweat. Don’t think that you can just diet, burn fat and look good. You will be skinny and SOFT. If you’re serious about losing weight, you have to exercise. Sorry, but that’s the truth.
  4. Water. If you’re drinking something, it should be water. Alcohol dehydrates you. Most other drinks have sugar (a diet no-no). Water will help your body burn fat. Plus, it makes your skin look better! (Put down that juice – it’s loaded with sugar!)
  5. Weight Train. Sorry girls, that’s the bad news. It’s hard and it works. It will burn fat more than just aerobics. If you are not weight training, when you do lose the weight, you will not look good. Trust me on this. You need at least some muscle on your body.
So, that’s what really works to burn fat. The above methods are not a magic pill to burn fat. They are not easy. You will not lose weight overnight, but the weight will come off steadily and you will look and feel good again. All you have to do is stick with it and find people that will support you, like I did.

I read this article jan 2007, peruzing on how to start off. I weighed around 266 pounds back then, so i gave it a try. I cut out sugar and alcohol completely, and i started to drink around 3 liters of water daily. In the evenings i would jump-rope for half an hour and mornings hit the treadmill and do weights. Since i don't eat much nor entertain junk food so my diet didn't change much, my only culprit was the alcohol. My family was the best suport-group, for so far i have managed to loose 77 pounds and be 189 pounds!!! I have 56 pounds to loose to reach my goal of 60kgs.

Good for you! The reason cutting out the alcohol worked is because alcohol is pure sugar and empty calories. You don't have to have a super-clean diet, unless you're severely overweight. Another trick that works is doing INTERVAL TRAINING. Try doing sprint sessions on a treadmill or eliptical. It works better than steady-state cardio (30minutes or more) because it boosts your metabolism. Try this: 5 mins - warmup 2mins - jogging 1 min - full sprinting (as hard as you can) 2 mins - jogging repeat this cycle 4x, then wrap up with a 5 min cooldown. To this for 1 month, then increase the cycle 1x every month. You'll see fantastic results!

You know, I'm at 176 pounds right now and am wanting to get down to 125. I've been struggling with weight issues for years now, and have made myself really depressed about it. I've decided to stop being a mope, get off my butt and do something about it. I'm going to try what you said, and I really, really hope that it works for me. I just can't be unhappy and unhealthy anymore. It really brings my spirit down. Well, we'll see how I do!

I am going to try this as well...I am 4'11 and weigh 160 pounds. It's awful. I used to be skinny when I was in highschool, but as soon as I hit age 18, I blew up to 141 pounds, and now in another 2 years I have gained another 20 pounds. I just want to be back to my skinny 0 size jean self!!! This is just not me. I'm afraid to see people I know in public because they are usually totally in shock because of how skinny I was before! Well it's time, I'm going to completely change my eating habits and my non existing exercising habits!!! We can all do it!
